The TV host recently opened up to PEOPLE about her 6-year-old son Calvin’s health battle — a journey that began with months of unexplained stomach pain and ended with a life-changing diagnosis.

Dylan recalled how Calvin constantly complained of “sharp stomach pain,” and despite multiple doctor visits, nothing seemed to add up. “We thought it was dairy. Then maybe his ears, or his teeth coming in. He even had a strange rash and his hair was falling out,” she said. When the pain became unbearable, the family rushed Calvin to the emergency room, fearing appendicitis. After further testing and a difficult endoscopy, the doctors finally uncovered the real cause — celiac disease, an autoimmune condition where gluten damages the small intestine.

At first, the news was terrifying. “When we heard the word ulcer, we thought the worst,” Dylan admitted. “But when it turned out to be celiac, it was almost a relief. It’s life-changing, but manageable.”

From that moment, the Dreyer-Fichera household underwent a complete transformation.
