Like the NBA, the WNBA chooses its All-Star Game starters through a combination of the fan vote, media vote and player vote. The process resulted in Fever star Caitlin Clark being named a starter on Monday, but the results didn’t come without controversy.
Clark was ranked curiously low among the player vote, compared to stronger showings in the fan and media votes. That raised eyebrows and left some wondering whether the result was more than just a difference in opinion.
The WNBA has had to deal with the perception that some of its players resent Clark for the attention she’s gotten since entering the league, with a handful of on-court incidents contributing to a narrative that the players are out to get her. Whether or not that’s accurate, the vote confirmed there does exist at least a bit of a gap between how fans view the former Iowa star and how her colleagues do.
Here’s a closer look at Clark’s voting results for the 2025 WNBA All-Star Game.
Caitlin Clark All-Star voting results
Here is where Clark ranked among guards in each of the three All-Star voting categories:
Fan vote: 1st
Media vote: 3rd
Player vote: 9th
Clark broke a WNBA record for most fan votes with more than 1.2 million, and that actually erased all doubt regarding her All-Star status before the reveal was made on Monday. As one of the top-two vote-getters from fans, Clark was named an All-Star captain on Sunday.
Monday’s announcement revealed Clark finished third in the media vote and ninth in the player vote among guards. Given Clark has missed seven of Indiana’s 16 games and recently battled through a shooting slump, connecting on only 1-of-23 3-pointers over a three-game span, it makes sense that her hot start to the season wasn’t enough for her to lead the media vote.
The player vote, however, caught the attention of fans and pundits. While the WNBA didn’t release the full player rankings — only the top-10 players based on weighted score — guards who were ranked above Clark include Allisha Gray, Sabrina Ionescu, Skylar Diggins, Paige Bueckers, Natasha Cloud, Kelsey Mitchell and Brittany Sykes.
Here’s more of what you need to know about the player vote and what it means.
Did WNBA players snub Caitlin Clark?
The disparity between Clark’s finish in the player vote compared to the fan and media votes didn’t go unnoticed. Some, including ESPN’s Dick Vitale, accused players of “jealousy” toward Clark.
A disparity between the fan vote and player vote isn’t especially unusual. Clark certainly seems to be the WNBA’s most popular player, so it wouldn’t be a surprise to see her dominate the fan vote regardless of the type of season she’s had. The media vote, however, acts as a supposedly neutral third party, and Clark’s third-place ranking among guards is much different than her ninth-place finish among players.
On one hand, Clark has missed nearly half of the season due to injury and struggled mightily in her three most recent games. On the other hand, she lit up the league with some stellar performances early on, including a triple-double, a 27-point double-double and a game in which she posted 32 points, eight rebounds and nine assists.
The narrative that certain WNBA players resent Clark and the attention she’s attracted has been a difficult one for the league to shake, particularly with Clark winding up in a few altercations in her first two seasons. The physicality of the WNBA has been something Clark has had to adjust to, but some fans believe she is facing more physicality that the average player.
ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith said in June that he believed there was resentment of Clark among WNBA players. “Caitlin Clark being that golden goose, that rising tide that’s lifting all boats, I stand by my past proclamations that there’s resentment towards her because of that,” Smith said, though he claimed that resentment is partly “because she instigates resentment.”
Regardless, Clark is set to start the WNBA All-Star Game in front of her home fans on July 19.
