Ryan Blaney Suggests to Michael Jordan That Bubba Wallace Took Away Win

Ryan Blaney had done all the hard work. On a long green-flag run in the final stage at Darlington Raceway, the Team Penske driver had navigated his way through the field and passed Tyler Reddick for the lead with four laps to go coming out of Turn 2. Unbelievably, right behind the No. 45 of Reddick, his 23XI Racing teammate Bubba Wallace got into the rear of Kyle Larson and sent the Hendrick Motorsports driver for a spin to bring out the caution.

During the pit stop, Denny Hamlin’s pit crew, which has been one of the best in 2025, pulled off another stellar stop and got the No. 11 car in front. That was all the veteran driver needed as he pulled out in front on the subsequent restart and won his second race in as many weeks. Blaney finished fifth.

Moments after the race, Hamlin’s 23XI Racing co-owner Michael Jordan walked down pit road and gave Blaney a pat on his backside before the pair shook hands.

“Almost,” Jordan told the 2023 champion in a video shared by The Athletic’s Jeff Gluck on X.

“Hey, if your boy didn’t spin out Larson, it would be,” Blaney stopped and shook his head with a smile.

“Did he spin out Larson?” Jordan asked. “I couldn’t tell,” the NBA Hall of Famer said before walking away.

Blaney smiled and gave him a thumbs up.

It was an odd sequence of events to close out the race, which saw William Byron dominate and lead for 243 laps before finishing second.

But the in-car camera and audio from Larson revealed that he checked up too quick in those final laps and admitted he was “embarrassed” by the move. It was a move that bookended a terrible day for the 2021 Cup champion, who spun by himself on Lap 4 of the race.

He completed 122 of the 297 laps and finished 37th.
