Elon Musk has been advised to spend some of his $337 billion (£264bn) fortune on acquiring Cheltenham Town and joining Ryan Reynolds in the EFL ranks.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Hollywood superstar Reynolds has, along with fellow co-chairman Rob McElhenney, been calling the shots at Wrexham since early in 2021. Considerable success has been overseen in North Wales, with back-to-back promotions being complemented by an award-winning documentary series that has opened up a window to the world.

Several other famous faces are now involved with Football League clubs in England – including NFL legends Tom Brady and JJ Watt (Birmingham City and Burnley), along with Anchorman actor Will Ferrell (Leeds United) – with there the promise of more investment to come.

THE GOSSIP

Tesla and X Corp mogul Musk, who boasts the honour of being the world’s richest man, is being told that he should jump aboard the EFL bandwagon and snap up a club that could rival Wrexham in the North American interest stakes.

WHAT FOOTBALL FINANCE EXPERT SAID

Football finance expert Dr Rob Wilson has told OLBG of what could become a stunning sporting venture: “If Elon Musk wants to get into football club ownership, Cheltenham Town are an extraordinarily interesting prospect, particularly to the US market.

“Millions of people in the US love British culture, particularly quintessential Middle England and the Cotswolds where Cheltenham is based. You’ve got these beautiful rolling hills in the background, you’ve got the racecourse so there is a really powerful story and a powerful narrative at a club like Cheltenham. They are up and coming and could be a great prospect.”

WHAT NEXT?

There have been claims that the English Football League could become entirely American-owned in the not too distant future, with funds continuing to flood across the Atlantic. It remains to be seen whether Musk intends to follow that trend, with his bank account allowing for the odd calculated risk to be taken.
