Ovechkin appeared particularly surprised and touched to have received a message from Michael Jordan when told about the video tribute postgame. The NHL’s newest goal-scoring king is a huge fan of basketball, stemming from his mom’s career as a two-time Olympic champion with the USSR.

“Be honest with you, I didn’t see, but it’s such a cool moment for me to have video from legends,” Ovechkin said postgame. “It’s gonna be forever, and I’m thankful for them for that video and messages.”

Ovechkin has often spoke about Jordan in interviews and was a big fan of Netflix’s The Last Dance, a docuseries with a particular focus on Jordan’s last season with the Chicago Bulls in 1997-98. He also told Men’s Journal in 2020 that Jordan is the one athlete that he would most like to meet more than any other.

The 39-year-old winger regularly wears a red Capitals hoodie around the rink before and after practice and games that reads “Well I’m not Michael Jordan” on the back. The sweet sweater was a gift from former Capitals winger Devante Smith-Pelly, who was in attendance to see both goal number 894 in DC and 895 in New York, after Ovechkin said the quote during a pregame warmup soccer session years ago.

Ovechkin was again wearing the hoodie before the game on Sunday and after the game while answering questions from the media.
