Dolly Parton Explains Why She Doesn’t Give Advice to Young Stars, Including Goddaughter Miley Cyrus

Dolly Parton, the legendary country music icon, has built a career spanning more than five decades, but despite her vast experience, she believes that offering advice to young stars isn’t the best approach. In an interview for PEOPLE magazine, Parton explained her philosophy on mentoring, particularly when it comes to her goddaughter, Miley Cyrus.

While Parton has undoubtedly seen it all in the music industry, from navigating public scrutiny to breaking down barriers with her bold fashion choices, she believes it’s more important to offer information rather than direct advice. “Like I say, I have information, but it’s really not right to try to tell somebody else how to live their life,” Parton shared. She emphasized that everyone’s journey is unique, and it’s important for individuals to follow their own path.

Reflecting on her early years in Nashville, Parton recalled how she was often told by industry veterans, like Chet Atkins, that she needed to tone down her style and be more conventional if she wanted to be taken seriously. “I was advised by a lot of people how I was doing things wrong when I came in,” she said. “I thought, ‘How can I do things wrong when it’s about me? I will know it if it’s wrong. I will know it because I’m that in tune with myself and that in tune with God.’” Her determination to stay true to herself led to her eventual success.

Parton, who values authenticity, believes it’s crucial for young stars, including Miley, to find their own way. “Who am I to tell Miley what to do?” she said. “Lord, I’ve done everything, and what I ain’t done, I intend to. She’s going to do that, too. But Miley’s smart; Miley knows what she’s doing.” Parton added that while she occasionally shares valuable insights with Miley, she prefers to lead by example. “I’d rather live an example,” Parton explained. “Everybody’s different. You’ve got your own journey.”

In the new Netflix series Dolly Parton’s Heartstrings, Parton plays the mentor to Julianne Hough’s character, who is navigating the music business, which mirrors Parton’s own journey of offering guidance, though never forcing her opinions on others. The anthology series, which delves into the stories behind some of Parton’s most beloved songs like Jolene and Two Doors Down, allows her to share the inspiration behind her music in a deeply personal way.

Parton also reflected on the deep pride she feels for Miley’s career. During a press conference for Heartstrings, Parton praised Miley for her talent and individuality, saying, “Miley is so talented. Miley has such gifts, and I think she’s gonna be great.” Despite the public’s frequent suggestions that Parton “talk to Miley,” the country star believes Miley is already doing just fine. “Miley will be Miley, I’ll be me and everybody needs to do their own thing,” she said.
