Sister Monica Clare has made a name for herself on social media, and now she’s opening up about the star-studded past she left behind by joining the church.

During a sit-down on the Today show to promote her memoir, the Episcopal nun discussed her previous career in Hollywood. In addition to her day job in advertising, she was an aspiring comedian training alongside big-name stars. She was a part of the Groundlings improv troupe with Jennifer Coolidge and Cheri Oteri.

She turned to the church seeking solutions for her unhappiness and began the process of interviewing to become a nun. While she’d already started pursuing the prospect, the TikTok star referenced one specific outing that helped her realize show business wasn’t her place.

Oteri had invited her to attend Jimmy Fallon’s birthday party at Los Angeles’ famed Chateau Marmont. “I thought, I cannot imagine anything worse,” Sister Monica Clare said with a laugh during her Today interview.

“Every single person at that party was famous except me,” she continued. She left the event in tears and decided to pivot her entire life.

“That’s it. I do not fit in in Hollywood,” the Change of Habit author recalled thinking. “I got divorced, I started to go to therapy and really started exploring what my authentic self actually was.”

During her conversation with Jenna Bush Hager and guest co-host Maria Shriver, Sister Monica Clare got a surprise video message from Oteri.

The Saturday Night Live alumna began by telling her old friend that following the nun on Instagram makes her “smile from ear to ear.”
