Dolly Parton Reflects on Dollywood as Beloved Theme Park Marks 40th Anniversary

PIGEON FORGE, Tenn. — Dolly Parton welcomed fans, families, and reporters to Dollywood this week, as the country music legend reflected on the park’s remarkable 40-year journey from a small mountain attraction to one of America’s most cherished destinations.

Since opening its gates in 1986, Dollywood has grown into a sprawling 160-acre theme park in the Smoky Mountains, attracting millions of visitors annually. For Parton, however, the milestone isn’t measured only in rides and attractions — but in memories, community, and the sense of home the park represents.

“Dollywood has always been more than roller coasters and shows,” Parton said. “It’s about celebrating the Smokies, our people, our music, and our way of life. When I dreamed of Dollywood, I wanted a place where families could come together, make memories, and feel the same love I grew up with here in Tennessee.”

Over the past four decades, Dollywood has expanded with record-breaking rides, award-winning entertainment, seasonal festivals, and the luxurious DreamMore Resort. Yet, Dolly reminded attendees that the park’s roots are in honoring Appalachian culture and values. “We wanted to give people something that felt real, something that told our story,” she said.

Parton also expressed gratitude to the thousands of Dollywood employees — affectionately known as “hosts” — whose work has shaped the park’s reputation for Southern hospitality. “They’re the heart of Dollywood,” she noted. “I couldn’t have done this without them.”

To celebrate the 40th anniversary, Dollywood has announced a year-long schedule of concerts, parades, and special performances, culminating in a summer spectacular featuring Dolly herself. Fans can also expect limited-edition merchandise, new culinary offerings inspired by Dolly’s favorite hometown recipes, and tributes highlighting the park’s history.

“Forty years is something to be proud of,” Parton said with her trademark smile. “But what makes me happiest is knowing Dollywood has become part of so many families’ stories. That’s the real gift.”
