Dancing on Ice fans were clearly divided as the show paid tribute to Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean following their big news last week. During Sunday night’s (February 18) live show, the pair confirmed they have “no plans” to step back from the ITV competition after announcing their retirement from skating together in 2025.

The British ice skaters announced on Wednesday (February 14), which marked the 40th anniversary of their Olympic gold success, that they would be stepping back from skating after embarking on one last UK tour next year.

Following the news, reports speculated that the duo from Nottingham would also leave their roles as judges on ITV’s Dancing On Ice after the current series. But Chris confirmed they wouldn’t be leaving their chairs on Dancing on Ice’s judging panel as they were surprised by the man who created their iconic outfits when the truck gold at the 1984 Winter Olympics.

At the start of the latest show, Dancing on Ice’s professional dancers also paid tribute to the ice skating legends as they took to the ice with a Bolero-themed group dance with the skaters all dressed in purple. Announcing the opening number, host Holly Willoughby said: “Get ready for a very special night on Dancing on Ice.”

Others, however, loved the performance. @joyceJo49834475 commented: “#DancingOnIce Well that wasn’t emotional watching the pro skaters doing Bolero. It was beautiful, a lovely tribute to @torvillanddean.” @suzysasha shared: “#DancingOnIce Great opening. Love the bolero!”

@jodieworld added: “The Bolero 40 years ago is such a stand-out early memory for me. Love watching #DancingOnIce every year. The professionals are so talented. But none give me goosebumps like Torvill and Dean do. There is something special in that pairing!”

Meanwhile, Torvill and Dean sent their own message late on Sunday evening, writing on X, formerly known as Twitter: “To everyone who is send so many lovely messages thank so much. 40 years since Bolero is a long time and yet its seems like a blink of an eye for us. Thank you so much.”
