The WNBA is reportedly scrambling, and a single ESPN headline is the cause. A story has blown wide open, detailing a massive, “unmatched” contract offer for Caitlin Clark, and it has allegedly sent the league into a state of “instant panic.” But for anyone who watched the 2025 season, the only shocking part is that it didn’t happen sooner.

Caitlin Clark, the rookie phenom who became the WNBA’s “main attraction,” has been credited with pushing the league to unprecedented levels of attention, revenue, and cultural relevance. And what did she receive in return for single-handedly generating millions? According to the video’s explosive narrative, she received a paltry salary and a season’s worth of “constant criticism, racial and physical hostility from opposing players and fans.”
Now, another league, “Unrivaled,” has stepped into the void, and they are not being subtle.
ESPN’s report claims this rival league has offered Clark an incredible $1 million for just three months of play. To put that in perspective, that is nearly 15 times the $70,000 rookie salary she earned from the WNBA for an entire year—a year in which she was the sole reason teams were “having to move their venues when she comes to play.” While the WNBA was profiting, Clark was “getting paid like $75,000 a year” while helping “generate millions.”
This, as the narrator points out, is a salary so low that the player who boosted the WNBA to a whole new level was “earning less than some mascots.”
But the “Unrivaled” offer isn’t just about the money, which also reportedly includes “significant equity in the league.” It’s about respect. It’s about protection. It’s a direct response to the WNBA’s alleged failure to protect its biggest star. While the WNBA offered a “tiny paycheck and acted like it was enough,” Unrivaled is offering a “full luxury experience.” This includes state-of-the-art facilities, a world-class medical staff, and a strong support team—in short, everything the WNBA allegedly failed to provide.
The message from Unrivaled is clear: “We see how special you are, and we’re ready to pay for it.” And, perhaps more importantly, “We’ll protect you.”
This promise of protection lies at the heart of the WNBA’s crisis. Clark’s rookie season was defined by a pattern of brutal, physical play that often crossed the line. She became a “constant target.” From her very first game, it appeared “some players were determined to slow her down by any means necessary.”
The video highlights two now-infamous moments. First, an intense game involving Angel Reese, where Reese “made very hard contact with Caitlyn Clark.” The narrator describes it as “obvious to everyone watching,” yet “surprisingly the referees didn’t call anything.” No foul, no review. Clark, visibly shaken, had to simply shake it off.
Then came the playoff moment that truly incensed fans: a “hard poke to the eye.” The contact was serious, yet once again, the officials didn’t respond. No foul was called. It became a clear “double standard.” The hits to Clark’s face and body went unpunished. But when Clark, having finally reached her limit, “vented her frustration by slamming a piece of equipment,” the referees “suddenly had perfect vision” and called a foul on her.
The league itself “stayed silent.” Every time Clark was knocked down, the WNBA allegedly did nothing. No statements, no concern. It was just “business as usual.”
This is the vacuum Unrivaled is stepping into. They are “making it clear player safety comes first.” Their approach is reportedly completely different, with “real rules that protect athletes” and “top-tier medical teams ready immediately.” They offer “full post-injury support” to ensure players are “truly ready to play again,” a stark contrast to the WNBA’s perceived “tape them up and send them out” mentality.
The crisis is compounded by the alleged off-court hostility. While Clark was shattering attendance records—drawing an average of 15,300 fans per game compared to the previous season’s average of 7,300—other players were allegedly casting “doubt on the new diverse fans she attracted.” The video claims players like Angel Reese and Alyssa Thomas even labeled these new fans as “racist,” making them “feel like outsiders.”

Unrivaled, by contrast, is being positioned as a league that “doesn’t tolerate that kind of behavior,” where players are “valued for their skill, not judged for who they attract.”
This offer has exposed the WNBA’s vulnerability. They had a “one-person business machine” who was the “sole reason for so many of these things happening this season.” She was the main event. And they allegedly failed to pay her, protect her, or respect the new fanbase she brought with her.
Now, a rival league has called their bluff, offering Clark the money and security the WNBA refused to. The panic is real, and the WNBA may have just lost the very star who was single-handedly building its future.
