Bindi Irwin, daughter of the late “Crocodile Hunter” Steve Irwin, is all grown up with a family of her own.

Bindi is the proud mother of daughter Grace Warrior Irwin Powell, 4, whom she shares with her husband, Chandler Powell. The couple welcomed their first child on March 25, 2021, exactly one year after they wed at the Australia Zoo.

In her August 2023 PEOPLE cover story, Bindi shared that she underwent surgery for endometriosis and referred to Grace as her and Powell’s “tiny little miracle.”

Bindi added that she and Powell “feel so lucky to have Grace.” She explained, “there was every chance that we wouldn’t have been able to have a little one, so to have our beautiful girl, we are so lucky.”

Grace is growing up around wildlife at the Australia Zoo, where her family lives. Before her daughter was born, Bindi told The Bump, “I know in my heart that she will forge her own path to make our planet a better place through her connections with the gorgeous animals that we protect here at Australia Zoo and the conservation work we do with animal species around the globe.”

Bindi and Powell welcomed Grace on their first wedding anniversary, March 25, 2021. In a post announcing her daughter’s arrival, the TV star called her husband and newborn “the two loves of her life” and wrote that her baby girl “chose the perfect day to be born.”

Powell also announced Grace’s arrival on Instagram, writing, “Thank you for gracing your beautiful mother and me on our wedding anniversary, so excited to have you home.”

 

Her middle name is a tribute to Steve Irwin

Bindi honored her father Steve, who died in 2006, with her daughter’s middle names. While Grace’s first name comes from Bindi’s great-grandmother and relatives in Powell’s family “dating back to the 1700s,” Bindi wrote on Instagram that Grace’s middle names, Warrior Irwin, are a tribute to Steve and “his legacy as the most incredible Wildlife Warrior.”

In 2023, Bindi told Hello! that Grace’s name came to her only after she gave birth. “When Grace was born my first words as I held her in my arms were that she’s our ‘graceful warrior,’ ” Bindi said. “Chandler and I immediately knew that should be her name. The name Grace Warrior suits our daughter perfectly and feels like the perfect way to honour the greatest Wildlife Warrior to have ever lived, my dad.”

 

She had her first “croc encounter” when she was 1 week old

One week after her birth, Grace’s grandmother Terri Irwin and uncle Robert Irwin celebrated April Fool’s Day with a photo of the family’s new addition surrounded by Crocs — the shoes, not the reptiles!

Robert wrote, “Grace’s first experience with crocs!!! 🐊 #AprilFools.”

 

She was introduced to animals at an early age

Given that her family lives at the Australia Zoo, it’s no surprise that Grace has been around animals since she was a newborn. Weeks after her birth, grandmother Terri shared a photo of Grace next to some of the chickens at the zoo.

Powell and Bindi have also shared photos of their daughter’s animal encounters, including pictures of Grace next to kangaroos, tortoises and a koala.

“We’re so proud of our Wildlife Warrior princess. I know our darling girl is going to grow up caring for Mother Earth and all her animals,” Bindi wrote on Instagram to honor Grace’s 1-month birthday.

 

She has khakis like her mom

Grace is officially a part of the “khaki crew,” the nickname Bindi uses for her family when they wear their Australia Zoo uniforms. Bindi’s daughter received her first khakis when she was just 1 month old, twinning with her dad in an Instagram post celebrating the milestone.

In 2022, Bindi posted another picture of Grace sporting a khaki outfit and a big smile, which she captioned: “Khaki isn’t just a colour, it’s an attitude.🤎.”

 

She started walking shortly after her first birthday

Less than two weeks after celebrating their daughter’s first birthday at the Australia Zoo, Powell and Bindi posted a video of Grace reaching a major milestone.

The short clip showed Grace taking steps all on her own from Bindi to Powell, who filmed the big moment. They captioned the video simply, “Big moment 💙.”

 

She’s “passionate about the natural world”

Grace has inherited the Irwin family’s love for wildlife. At a 2023 gala honoring her late father, Bindi told PEOPLE, “She just loves wildlife, and she gets so excited to learn more. It’s really remarkable to see how passionate she is about the natural world.”

Bindi shared that although Grace was only 2 at the time, she knows the names of many animals. “She just talks about all these different dinosaur names that we don’t know how she knows them all,” Bindi added. “It is unreal. I mean, I guess it runs in the family.”

Grace celebrated her 4th birthday surrounded by all things nature in March 2025. In honor of the occasion, Bindi and Powell shared a joint Instagram post that included photos of her party.

“March 25❤️ Celebrating 5 years of marriage and our beautiful daughter’s 4th birthday. I still can’t believe Grace was born on our anniversary,” Bindi wrote in the caption. “Thankful every minute for this incredible family of mine. How did I get so lucky?”

Grace’s family has a tradition of celebrating what they call “unbirthdays.” On Instagram, Bindi described the tradition as celebrating when “you turn a half,” midway between birthdays.

For Grace’s second “unbirthday” in September 2023, Bindi’s little girl was allowed to choose whatever she wanted from the Australia Zoo elephant shop.

In her May 2022 PEOPLE cover story, Bindi shared that Grace has a deep connection to her late grandfather, Steve. “We have so many documentaries of Dad, and we’re always playing them for Grace,” Bindi said. “It’s so fun to watch her study him. I didn’t realize how much Dad’s passion for life and his animated facial expressions — I mean, they captivate her.”

According to Bindi, Grace stares at her grandfather “in complete and utter fascination” and “hangs on every word he says.” She added, “Whether he’s talking about a croc or a spider, she thinks it’s amazing.”

Bindi also said she “definitely sees parts” of her dad in Grace. “His determination and his inability to sit still. I think that’s really special. I’m excited to see as she grows up how her personality will develop,” she said.

Bindi added that she thinks Steve would have been equally as obsessed with Grace: “If Dad was around, honestly, we would never see her. He would be in love.”
