Today co-anchor Savannah Guthrie shared rare insight into her 2009 divorce from first husband Mark Orchard, noting that she intentionally set a boundary to not publicly discuss it.
Savannah Guthrie is reporting from the frontlines of her personal boundaries.
The Today co-anchor made a rare reference to her divorce from Mark Orchard, to whom she was married from 2005 to 2009, while explaining why she didn’t discuss the breakup in her 2024 book Mostly What God Does.
“I don’t want to talk about getting divorced,” Savannah said on the July 1 episode of Monica Lewinsky’s Reclaiming podcast. “It was horrible and sad and it broke my heart. It took me years to recover. I’m not blaming anyone but I don’t really want to get into it.”
In fact, the Emmy-winning journalist gave a disclaimer throughout her book that the intimate details from some of her life’s “sadnesses” were intentionally left out because “some of it was too personal and too embarrassing.”
“I’m down here and my feet are burning on the pavement—I just don’t want to tell you why the pavement was so hot or how many blisters I had on my feet,” she shared about the disclaimer. “I don’t want to give you the gory details. But I do want to share with you and I understand that you may have these questions and maybe this won’t be enough for you.”
Savannah—who shares kids Vale, 10, and Charley, 8, with husband Michael Feldman, with whom she tied the knot in 2014—also addressed readers’ potential skepticism.
“You might be wondering, ‘Seems like you have it all going for you: You’re married, you’ve got these two kids, you’ve got this great job. What problems do you have?’” she shared. “So, I wanted to say, ‘You know what, I have experienced adversity, but I don’t really want to tell you about the depths of that.’”
In response to her wish to maintain her privacy, Savannah noted she was delighted with everyone’s reaction.

“Pretty much everyone I ever did an interview with and sat down with respected that boundary,” she said. “I appreciate that. I don’t take that for granted.”
