It’s a discovery suitable for a reality television show: Oprah Winfrey recently learned that she had a half-sister who was given up for adoption without her ever knowing. Ms. Winfrey introduced her half-sister, Patricia, on “The Oprah Winfrey Show” on Monday.

“Imagine my shock just a few months ago, at the end of October, when I found out I have another sister living just 90 minutes away,” Ms. Winfrey said.

The women met for the first time on Thanksgiving Day in Milwaukee, where Patricia lives. Her last name was not disclosed.

Their mother, Vernita Lee, gave birth to Patricia when Ms. Winfrey, then 9, was living with her father in another city. “I had no idea my mother was even pregnant,” she said.
