Elon Musk, the world’s richest man, has reportedly bought a $35 million estate in Austin, Texas, to accommodate his large family, which includes three former partners and at least 11 children.
Elon Musk, the tech titan known for launching rockets into space and revolutionizing transportation with electric cars, has now made headlines for something far closer to home — literally. The CEO of Tesla and SpaceX has reportedly purchased a sprawling $35 million estate in one of Texas’ most elite neighborhoods, designed to accommodate his ever-growing family of 11 children born from multiple relationships.
This latest real estate acquisition is more than just a lavish purchase — it’s a clear reflection of Musk’s personal evolution. The enigmatic billionaire, often in the spotlight for his eccentric behavior and grandiose ambitions, is now also drawing attention as a father committed to crafting a private, expansive sanctuary for his children. The property, located just outside Austin, marks a dramatic shift from Musk’s previously touted minimalist lifestyle and his earlier claims of living in a modest, prefab tiny home.
According to sources cited by the New York Times, the purchase includes two adjoining properties: a 14,400-square-foot Tuscan-style mansion and a 6-bedroom home behind it. To ensure privacy, Musk had the sellers sign multiple nondisclosure agreements and paid up to 70% above market value.
Musk intends for two of the mothers of his children, Neuralink executive Shivon Zilis and singer Grimes, to live on the estate. This arrangement is intended to allow better management of time with his younger children and foster connections between them.
While he is open to visits from his first wife, Justine Musk, 52, and their adult children, they have not been a priority in the living plans. However, there is said to be space for them if they wish to visit.

Zilis, 38, has already moved into one of the properties with her twins. Grimes, legally known as Claire Boucher and now 36, has not yet relocated due to a custody battle with Musk over their three children, which began in October 2023. Attempts by Page Six to get comments from the mothers of Musk’s children were unsuccessful.
Musk, 53, holds a net worth of $268.8 billion as of Oct. 26, according to Forbes. The Tesla CEO has long been vocal about the need for higher birth rates to combat global population decline. Musk shares 2-year-old twins with Zilis and reportedly welcomed another child earlier this year.
With Grimes, he has three children. He and his first wife, Justine, share five children, though they suffered the loss of a baby due to sudden infant death syndrome in 2002.
A Growing Family Tree — and Complex Dynamics
The announcement comes at a time when Musk’s family life is under renewed scrutiny. Recently, the billionaire was photographed publicly for the first time with the mother of his secret twins, born in late 2021 — a woman named Shivon Zilis, an executive at one of Musk’s AI ventures, Neuralink. The twins’ birth, which had previously been kept under wraps, brings Musk’s total known children to 11.
The Tesla CEO also shares children with Canadian pop artist Grimes (Claire Boucher), including their son X Æ A-Xii and daughter Exa Dark Sideræl Musk, also known as “Y.” In a recent interview, Musk acknowledged that Grimes plays a “bigger role” in raising X, reflecting an arrangement that is as unconventional as their children’s names.
Additionally, Musk has five children from his marriage to Canadian author Justine Musk — a set of twins and triplets born in the early 2000s — now in their late teens and early twenties. One of the twins, Vivian Jenna Wilson, has legally distanced herself from Musk, both in name and in public association, citing differences in values and identity.
Despite the complexities of co-parenting across multiple households, Musk’s new estate seems designed to offer a common ground — a central, private location where his children can gather, grow, and connect under one proverbial (and literal) roof.
A Sanctuary of Legacy and Control
To many observers, the $35 million estate is more than a luxurious residence — it’s a legacy project. Musk, who has long talked about “multiplying civilization” and expressed concern about declining birth rates, often frames his expanding family as part of a broader philosophical mission. In past statements, he has even declared that “civilization is going to crumble” if people don’t have more children.
In that context, the estate serves not only as a home but as a sanctuary for what Musk might see as his personal contribution to the future of humanity. It’s a private, secure domain where he can cultivate his children’s development — away from the chaos of social media, paparazzi, and public scrutiny.
“Musk doesn’t do anything small,” said a former Tesla executive who spoke on condition of anonymity. “If he’s going to build rockets, he builds them to go to Mars. If he’s going to raise kids, he’s going to build an empire for them.”
From Prefab to Palatial
The dramatic scale of Musk’s new home is a stark contrast to his earlier, minimalist statements. In 2020, he tweeted that he had “sold almost all physical possessions” and “will own no house.” At one point, he was reportedly living in a tiny $50,000 prefab home near SpaceX’s Starbase in Boca Chica, Texas.
But as his family has grown, so too has his footprint. The Texas estate not only allows for more physical space but offers Musk the opportunity to live with multiple children at once, rather than shuttling between homes or relying on nannies and co-parents spread across the country.
“His philosophy about life is constantly evolving,” said a family acquaintance. “What didn’t matter to him a few years ago — like having a large, comfortable space for his kids — now seems to be a priority.”
The Personal Side of a Public Man
While Musk’s companies — Tesla, SpaceX, Neuralink, and the newly rebranded xAI — continue to push the boundaries of science and innovation, his personal life has become equally newsworthy. As the public tries to understand the man behind the mission to Mars, this Texas estate offers a rare glimpse into what he values most behind closed doors.
For a man who once famously slept on the Tesla factory floor to meet production deadlines, investing millions into a multi-mansion property signals a notable shift. It suggests that, amid global ambitions and business headlines, Musk is also dedicating time, energy, and resources toward cultivating his most personal legacy: his children.
Whether this move will bring stability to Musk’s family life or raise further questions about the complexities of raising 11 children across different households remains to be seen. But for now, one thing is clear: Elon Musk isn’t just building the future — he’s building a home for it.
