Glen Powell’s mother has spoken out to clear the air about his relationship with Sydney Sweeney, following news that she called off her May wedding to fiancé Jonathan Davino and ended their seven-year romance.

Powell and Sydney, co-stars in the hit rom-com, “Anyone But You,” reunited in Dallas over the weekend but they were there to celebrate the wedding of Powell’s sister, Leslie. So says Cyndy Powell, the actor’s mother and the mother of the bride, in an interview with the Daily Mail.

Fans have long speculated that Powell and Sydney’s on-screen chemistry in the 2023 film wasn’t just acting, and they were excited to see photos of the celebrities together at a popular Dallas restaurant on Friday night.

Cyndy Powell told the Daily Mail that her son, 36, and Sweeney, 27, were attending the rehearsal dinner, and, in hindsight, she wishes they had chosen a more secluded restaurant so that photos of the two together wouldn’t have emerged on gossip sites. But Cyndy Powell insisted that her son and Sweeney are just friends.

“They’re definitely not together. It was just, like, she was there (at the wedding) with her friend,” Cyndy Powell said.

Moreover, Sweeney has become “really close friends” with the entire Powell family, particularly her daughter and Glen’s sister, Leslie Powell, a Los Angeles-based singer and songwriter. Sweeney had apparently RSVP’d to attend Leslie Powell’s wedding “a long time” ago, before her own wedding plans fell apart. Notably, Cyndy Powell revealed that Sweeney’s plus-one was not her fiancé but her another good friend.

Cyndy Powell didn’t appear to have any comment on Sweeney’s situation with Davino, just that she and her son are not a couple. The idea of any kind of romance between them is “silly.”

“He’s loves his family, he loves his friends. And Sydney is a friend,” Cyndy Powell said. “They’ve been friends for so long.” She noted that her son and Sweeney have had plenty of opportunities to date each other, but never seemed interested.

“They could have made anything happen that they wanted to at any point,” Cyndy Powell added. “But he’s got so many friends that care about him and he cares about, and he’s got a really nice group of friends that they kind of take care of each other. It’s really nice.”

Being such a good friend, Powell, no doubt, is helping Sweeney navigate her relationship troubles with Davino, a businessman and restaurateur.

The latest word on Sweeney and Davino, 41, is that they’ve “ended things for good” after calling off their wedding, which was scheduled to take place in May, Page Six reported. 

Sources told People on Monday that Sweeney is really career-focused right now and isn’t ready to settle down. Indeed, the “Euphoria” star has several movies in the works, according to IMDB. They include “The Housemaid” with Brandon Sklenar and Amanda Seyfried and a film about the “scandalous” 1950s Hollywood romance of Kim Novak and Sammy Davis, Jr.

“She’s exactly where she wants to be,” a source told People. “Most people would feel overwhelmed by her working schedule this year, but not Syd. She’s all about working right now and very excited about all her projects.”

The source added: “What did make her overwhelmed, though, was her relationship and her wedding. She didn’t feel right about it.”

Sweeney and Davino were first romantically linked in the fall of 2018 and got engaged in 2022. But breakup rumors began to swirl in late February when TMZ first reported that Sweeney had postponed their wedding. Then, TMZ revealed in March that Sweeney was staying at the Beverly Hills Hotel — without Davino — rather than at one of her two homes in Los Angeles.

But Page Six noted that Sweeney and Davino have long been plagued by break-up rumors due to the “ultra-private” nature of their relationship. Davino and Sweeney rarely were seen at public events together.
