John Travolta‘s career-saving comedy movie franchise, which made over $400 million at the box office combined, receives a sequel update from its creator decades later.

After rising to fame for his role in the sitcom Welcome Back, Kotter, Travolta burst onto the scene during the 1970s with Saturday Night Fever and Grease, which were both big box office successes that capitulated him into superstardom, with the former also earning him an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor. However, the following decade wasn’t as successful for Travolta.

During the 1980s, Travolta starred in a series of commercial and critical failures that temporarily tanked his career, such as Two of a Kind and Perfect, the former reuniting him with Grease star Olivia Newton-John. Even the Saturday Night Fever sequel Staying Alive, which was a financial success, was scorned by critics and failed to turn his career around. Travolta’s career was eventually saved by the 1989 comedy Look Who’s Talking, which made $297 million at the box office, his most successful movie since Grease.

Travolta’s career wasn’t truly revived until he starred in Pulp Fiction, which earned him another Academy Award nomination for Best Actor and propelled him back onto the A-list.

The Look Who’s Talking franchise receives a sequel update from its franchise creator. The comedy franchise consists of three movies – 1989’s Look Who’s Talking, 1990’s Look Who’s Talking Too, and 1993’s Look Who’s Talking Now! – which follow John Travolta’s James and Kirstie Alley’s Mollie Ubriacco as they raise babies and later pets, whose humorous inner thoughts are heard only by the audience. The franchise features the voices of Bruce Willis, Joan Rivers, Roseanne Barr, Damon Wayans, Mel Brooks, Danny DeVito, and Diane Keaton.

Now, over 30 years after the last sequel, the franchise has received an update from its creator Amy Heckerling, who wrote and directed the first two films. During a recent interview with Empire for the original film’s 35th anniversary, Heckerling revealed that she is writing a new script for the Look Who’s Talking franchise alongside her daughter, Mollie, who actually inspired the original film back in 1985. Who knows if it’ll become a “thing,” but I’m excited. I’m not through with [Look Who’s Talking] yet… She was looking at us, we were looking at her. Suddenly, [we] started ad-libbing things she might be saying. In my mind, I was like: “Oh no. This is gonna be my next movie.” … Family-oriented and cute – and I don’t feel like that’s me. But this was the idea I had.

While Heckerling is working on a script for the franchise, it’s uncertain if the project will ever actually be greenlit. Though the original movie was a big box-office success, the first sequel earned less than half of its predecessor and fared poorly with critics. Look Who’s Talking Now!, written and directed by Tom Ropelewski, was a failure both critically and commercially, becoming one of the rare movies to earn a 0% on Rotten Tomatoes. However, if there’s anyone who can revive the franchise, it’s Heckerling, who steered the original movie to much success and saved John Travolta‘s career.
