Pawn Stars: Glory, Scandals, and the Untold Stories Behind the Camera
When Pawn Stars premiered on History Channel in 2009, few could have predicted that a simple pawn shop in Las Vegas would become a global sensation. The show turned Gold & Silver Pawn Shop, run by the Harrison family, into a must-visit landmark, attracting millions of viewers fascinated by history-packed treasures walking through its doors.
Yet, beyond the cheerful bargaining and historic gems lies a much darker narrative—a story of fame, fortune, loss, and controversy.
Richard “Old Man” Harrison – The Heart of Pawn Stars
Richard Harrison, affectionately known as “The Old Man,” was the cornerstone of the shop and the show. With his stern demeanor, sharp wit, and no-nonsense business sense, he became an instant fan favorite.
On June 25, 2018, Richard passed away at 77 after a long battle with Parkinson’s disease. His death left a massive void in both the family and the series. Rick Harrison, his son and co-star, expressed his grief in a heartfelt message:
“He was my hero, and I was fortunate to have such a great father.”
The show later aired a special episode, A Treasure Remembered, highlighting some of the Old Man’s most iconic moments—a fitting tribute to the man who started it all.
The Tragic Story of Adam Harrison
If Richard symbolized discipline and strength, Adam Harrison’s story is a heartbreaking contrast. Born in 1984, Adam was Rick’s second son. Unlike his brother Corey, Adam had no interest in TV fame and kept a low profile, working as a plumber away from the spotlight.
However, Adam battled substance abuse for years. On January 19, 2024, he was found dead in Las Vegas from an accidental overdose involving fentanyl and methamphetamine. He was only 39.
Rick posted a short but emotional message:
“You will always be in my heart. I love you, Adam.”
Adam’s death underscored the devastating impact of the fentanyl crisis sweeping the U.S., which claimed over 100,000 lives in 2023 alone. In response, the Harrison family set up an educational fund for Adam’s son and Rick began advocating for stronger action against fentanyl trafficking.
Chumlee – From Comic Relief to Criminal Charges
Austin “Chumlee” Russell became a fan favorite thanks to his goofy humor and lovable personality. But in 2016, his off-screen life took a dramatic turn when police raided his home and discovered drugs and firearms. Chumlee faced felony charges and was sentenced to three years of probation and counseling.
After the scandal, Chumlee committed to a healthier lifestyle, losing over 100 pounds and reinventing himself. He continues to appear on the show and runs Chumlee’s Candy on the Boulevard, a sweet shop popular with fans.

Controversies and Behind-the-Scenes Drama
Chumlee isn’t the only one who faced trouble:
Olivia Black – briefly featured in season 5, was fired after risqué modeling photos surfaced. She later sued the production company but lost the case.
Johnny Jimenez Jr. – the toy expert, was arrested in 2015 on domestic violence allegations, though he denied the charges.
Corey Harrison – Rick’s eldest son, faced a DUI arrest in 2023 and has gone through two divorces, though he remains a central figure on the show.
Family Feuds and Legal Battles
In 2022, Pawn Stars fans were shocked when Joanne Harrison—Rick’s mother—filed a lawsuit accusing him of tricking her into signing over her 49% ownership of the pawn shop while she was hospitalized. She claimed she was denied financial transparency and rightful control.
Rick strongly denied the allegations, calling it a misunderstanding fueled by outside influence. The lawsuit strained the family’s image as a united front—a core element of the show’s appeal.
From Reality TV to Cultural Phenomenon

Despite scandals, Pawn Stars revolutionized reality TV. It turned what many saw as a shady business into a treasure trove of history, sparking global interest in antiques and collectibles.
Just 10 weeks after its debut, Pawn Stars became History Channel’s top-rated series. The Gold & Silver Pawn Shop now attracts thousands of tourists daily, and the brand expanded into spin-offs like American Restoration and Counting Cars, further cementing its cultural impact.
Fame Comes with a Price
Behind the deals and laughter, Pawn Stars is a cautionary tale about family, fame, and the hidden costs of success. Richard Harrison’s passing marked the end of an era, and Adam’s death sounded an alarm on America’s drug crisis.
The show continues into its 22nd season (2024), but its legacy will forever be a mix of glory and heartbreak, an American dream story with real-world consequences.
