Inside Rihanna’s new US$21 million ‘Mansion in the Sky’: the Fenty billionaire splashed out on Friends star Matthew Perry’s former Los Angeles penthouse, which has a pool, cinema and Pilates studios

Rihanna is the new owner of a Los Angeles penthouse in the celebrity-approved, paparazzi-proof, 42-story The Century condominium building. The 40th-floor penthouse was formerly owned by Matthew Perry, who sold it in 2021 for US$21.6 million.

According to sources, the Fenty founder paid US$21 million for the four-bedroom, 9,000 sq ft condo. She has been a resident of The Century since 2014 in a much smaller unit; she will gain one more bedroom, three more bathrooms, and almost 6,000 additional sq ft with her new, higher-floor pad.

Rihanna’s home features panoramic views over Los Angeles

The new home includes city, ocean and mountain views, all of which are visually stunning in daylight and sparkling with lights at night. Each room is enormous. The living room comes with two fireplaces and a huge master suite with multiple living spaces. Overall, there are four bedrooms and eight bathrooms, a game room and a home theatre.

The chef’s kitchen has island seating as well as a table for casual dining, and there is a separate dining room with glass walls highlighting the views. Four terraces are perfect for entertaining and dining.

The Century is a celebrity hotspot

Designed by Robert A.M. Stern Architects in 2010, The Century has been a popular choice for many A-listers and celebrities. With owners such as Candy Spelling, widow of filmmaker Aaron Spelling, who bought the top two floors; Paula Abdul and Elizabeth Berkley. Others who have flocked to the building including Denzel Washington, a Saudi princess and a Russian billionaire.

The building has 1.6 hectares of lush private gardens, a 23-metre-long swimming pool, a screening room, yoga and Pilates studios, and a wine-storage facility.

Perry bought the entire 40th floor in 2017, brought in his team of architect Scott Joyce and interior designer LM Pagano to do significant upgrades, and listed it in 2019 for US$35 million. The Friends star advertised the condo as his “Mansion in the Sky” and eventually reduced the price to US$23 million before selling it in 2021 to Nick Molnar, the Aussie co-founder of Afterpay.

Molnar listed the flat in late 2022 for US$28 million. Media have dubbed the Perry and Molnar sales as two of the most expensive condo transactions in Los Angeles residential sales history.

Both Rihanna and Perry are part of Hollywood’s celebrity home-lovers clan

Rihanna has owned or rented at least a dozen homes, including two Beverly Hills homes that she is currently renting out. In addition to The Century condo, Perry has owned luxury homes in Pacific Palisades and a 5,500 sq ft Malibu Beach home he sold in 2021 for US$13 million.

Best known for his role as Chandler Bing in the mega-hit sitcom Friends, where he made US$1 million per episode, Perry has continued to act in television, film and on stage. His recent project was a two-part miniseries starring as Ted Kennedy in a Reelz production of The Kennedys: After Camelot.

Rihanna has sold over 250 million records and was the star performer at the 2023 Super Bowl halftime show. She lives with fellow singer A$AP Rocky and is pregnant with their second child.
