Rafael Nadal has a decision about the 2024 US Open

Rafael Nadal has made an early decision about the 2024 US Open – the final Grand Slam of the year.

For Nadal, the most recent of his four US Open titles won in the US was in 2019, this is the second consecutive year he has not participated in the final Grand Slam of the year.

“I’m writing here today to let you know that this year, I’ve decided not to participate in the US Open, where I have great memories,” the 38-year-old tennis player wrote in a post on X page.

“I will miss the special and electric night practices in NYC at Ashe, but I don’t think I can give 100% this time.”

The Spanish legend said his next event will be the Laver Cup taking place from September 20 to 22 in Berlin (Germany).

The 22-time Grand Slam champion is fresh from the 2024 Paris Olympics, where he lost to Novak Djokovic in the second round of the men’s singles and reached the quarterfinals of the men’s doubles with Carlos Alcaraz .

Following the news of Nadal’s withdrawal, US Open director Stacey Allaster said in a statement: “Rafa is a great champion and the fans and everyone involved with the tournament will miss him at this year’s tournament.”

We wish him all the best and look forward to his return to the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.”

The former world number one has dropped to 159th in the rankings after two years of struggling with injuries and suffered one of his worst defeats to Djokovic at the Olympics, 1-6, 4-6.

Nadal missed the Australian Open in January after suffering a torn muscle during his return from a long injury. He was eliminated in the first round of the French Open in May (losing to Alexander Zverev).

The Spaniard skipped Wimbledon to prepare for the Paris Olympics, where tennis is held on the clay courts at Roland Garros where he has 14 French Open titles.
