Emma RaducanuĀ faces a short-term slide down theĀ WTAĀ rankings as she takes a short break from action. The British No. 2Ā shot up the leaderboardĀ with her excellent performances at the Miami Open but it seems she might not be in action again until later this month.

Raducanu hasĀ pulled out of the Billie Jean King CupĀ matches in the Netherlands this month. It has also been reported that she will skip next week’s WTA 250 tournament in Rouen, France. The 22-year-old is keen to focus on her health having missed much of the last two years through injury. She remains on the entry list for the Madrid Open later this month.

The 2021 US Open champion has enjoyed a very positive rise up the rankings this year. She is up to No. 47 and climbing into the top 50 was a reward for her excellent performances in Miami, where she reached the quarter-final.

However, a momentary dip back out of the top 50 could now follow. Raducanu could now lose the 108 ranking points she earned at the Stuttgart Open.

However, the Madrid Open and the Italian Open offer excellent opportunities for Raducanu to build ranking points later in the month. There will also be hope that she can go far at the French Open and pick up even more points.

Former British tennis star Tim Henman has been encouraged by Raducanu’s willingness to play more matches this year. ā€œIf she can stay healthy and competes a lot, the results will come because she’s that good,ā€ he said.

ā€œIf she wasn’t good enough, you’d say she has to pick her tournaments and play some weaker events. With Emma, if she stays healthy, I’m convinced the results will follow. I never thought it was about her level. When she has played, her level has always been very good, but if you look at the breakdown of her ranking last year, I think she played 33 matches and 11 of them were on grass.

ā€œWhen you look at the other 10 months of the year, to have only played 22 matches is so few. She is aware of that, I’m sure, and she will get a coach at the right moment, but for me, the physical work she is doing is most significant. I’ve always been a big, big advocate of playing matches. I always played a lot of matches and Emma is right to do that now.ā€
