After Drew Carey spent years being mocked by his Whose Line Is It Anyway? co-stars, he became an incredibly wealthy talk show host. However, even though The Traitors earned Alan Cumming many new fans, hosting the show is hard for him and Padma Lakshmi revealed what made hosting Top Chef difficult. On top of that, there are a lot of other successful hosts to compete with, like Jeff Probst, who arguably is the best reality show host ever.

Considering how challenging being a TV host can be, it wouldn’t be shocking if Drew Carey wanted to quit The Price Is Right. However, Drew revealed that he plans to host The Price Is Right for a long time, and he wants to end his tenure in a shocking and tragic way.

Drew Carey Talked About Dying Onstage While Hosting The Price Is Right

Looking at everything he has accomplished, it becomes clear that Drew Carey has had an extremely underrated career. A successful comedian, Drew went on to star in a successful sitcom for many years. After that, Drew hosted Whose Line Is It Anyway? for many seasons before taking over The Price Is Right in the same role.

Given how successful Drew has been, it is clear that he could rest on his laurels in terms of his accomplishments. It also seems obvious that Drew shouldn’t have any financial concerns for the rest of his life.

Despite all that, Drew still commented that he wants to keep working literally until the moment he dies.

In May 2024, Drew Carey spoke to People about his plans for his future involvement with The Price Is Right. According to what Drew told the outlet, he has some desire to die while he is still hosting The Price Is Right.

Thoughts of dying on stage with a microphone in my hand have gone through my mind.

As amazing as that quote is, it is important to put Drew’s comments about hosting The Price Is Right until he dies in the proper context.

After he made that comment to People during an interview, the outlet’s article about his remarks stated that Drew was joking. Furthermore, the article revealed that Drew laughed after he told the outlet that he had thought about dying onstage.

In September 2023, Drew Carey told People what he admired about how Bob Barker hosted The Price Is Right. “He was so good at this. On The Price Is Right stage, he was so good at relating to people and getting them to be relaxed and be themselves. You watch his demeanor and his attitude. He never seemed stressed.”

That said, People’s depiction of Drew’s remarks doesn’t mean they shouldn’t be taken seriously. There are many reasons why Drew’s comment seems like it might be something worthy of being taken seriously. After all, some jokes have truth to them and the Drew may have just been laughing that part of him wants to die while hosting the show.

The most compelling reason to take Drew’s comments seriously is what he went on to tell People.

According to Famous Birthdays, Drew Carey was born in Cleveland Ohio on May 23rd, 1958. That means that as of January 2025, Drew was 66 years old.

During the interview, Drew went on to say that he never wants to retire from hosting The Price Is Right.

I never want to leave. I’m having such a good time there.

Given that Drew stated that he never wants to retire from The Price Is Right, it makes sense to consider what it would be like if his comments came to fruition.

On the one hand, it would be beautiful if Drew passed away while hosting The Price Is Right. After all, that would mean that Drew was doing what he loves until the very end.

That doesn’t change that Drew dying while hosting The Price Is Right would be tragic for a lot of people. After all, that would mean that a packed studio audience full of people who love him would witness Drew’s passing. It is easy to imagine how traumatic it could be for fans to witness Drew’s passing.

The fact that Drew feels so passionate about never retiring from The Price Is Right makes a lot of sense. After all, Drew told People about how much support he gets as The Price Is Right’s host.

“Everybody treats me great and the cast is great and the production office is great. I really feel supported and loved there and wanted. When you’re 65 and in the entertainment business, you don’t really get that that often. I’m in a pretty rare situation so I wanna keep that going as long as I can.”

Why Drew Carey Loves Hosting The Price Is Right So Much He Never Wants To Retire

In addition to revealing that he feels fully supported as The Price Is Right’s host, Drew revealed more about why he loves his job. During a separate People interview from March 2024, Drew explained why hosting The Price Is Right is a dream job for him.

While talking to People in March 2024, Drew revealed that he initially turned down the chance to host The Price Is Right. However, Drew changed his mind after one of The Price Is Right’s producers pointed out that hosting the show would mean getting paid to do the thing he loves most.

“One of the show’s producers asked me what my favorite thing to do was. I go, ‘I love leaving big tips when I go to restaurants.’ ‘Well, if you work on The Price Is Right, you’ll be able to do that all the time for a living,’ they said. ‘Just give out things.’ That was the light bulb that went off in my head.”

During the same People interview, Drew perfectly described why hosting The Price Is Right is so wonderful for him.

I could just make a living giving prizes to people and being around happy people all day.

Given the way that Drew talks about what hosting The Price Is Right is like for him, it is easy to understand why he never wants to give that up.
