Serena Williams, the tennis legend, recently stirred the pot by posting a throwback image on Instagram from her first Grand Slam victory at the US Open in 1999. While the icon’s intent was to partake in the trending “It Girl” challenge, the timing of her post drew mixed reactions from her fans, leading to a wild storm of speculative comments.

Williams, a prodigy of her father, Richard Williams, was destined for greatness from the start. Richard had a dream that his children would dominate the tennis scene after witnessing Romanian tennis legend, Virginia Ruzici, win a substantial prize in 1979. His dream came true as Venus and Serena Williams grew up to rule the sport, leaving a lasting impact.

Serena’s journey to stardom commenced at the tender age of 17 at the 1999 US Open. She made history as the first African-American woman to clinch a Grand Slam singles title since Althea Gibson in 1958. Her victorious journey included defeating top tennis players like Kim Clijsters, Conchita Martinez, Monica Seles, and Lindsay Davenport, culminating in a triumphant final against Martina Hingis. This victory not only validated Richard’s faith in her but also marked the beginning of an illustrious career with 22 more Grand Slam titles under her belt.

In her recent Instagram post, Williams shared a throwback photo of herself at 17, posing with her first Grand Slam trophy, as part of the “It Girl” challenge. The post, however, sparked controversy due to its timing.

Fans speculated that the post might be casting shade on Maria Sharapova, given the duo’s history of an intense rivalry. Williams and Sharapova faced each other 22 times between 2004 and 2019, with Williams dominating the head-to-head record at 20-2. The post was also interpreted as a veiled jab at 17-year-old Mirra Andreeva, who had just marked her first WTA 1000 event victory a day before Williams’ post.

The timing of Williams’ post led some fans to suspect it was an attempt to eclipse Andreeva’s achievement. Some fans expressed disappointment, stating that it was “distasteful” for such a successful tennis player to demean others.
