Serena Williams has been making headlines lately for her significant weight loss transformation. And now we know exactly how she’s been able to drop all those pounds.
As we previously told you, the tennis champ has been the topic of online chatter recently for the last couple months thanks to her slimmed down physique. In particular, a post from mid-July had fans concerned that the beautifully built Williams had worked away all her gorgeous curves. She made headlines yet again just a few weeks later when she posted yet another picture of her slimmed down figure which prompted even more people to wonder how and why she’s looking the way she’s looking.
Now, she’s finally opened up about and come clean about why: Speaking in a video to her Instagram on Thursday, she revealed that she’s been taking GLP-1 with a new company Ro to help aid in her weight loss journey. So far, she’s lost 31 pounds
“I am on GLP-1s and I’m not ashamed to say it,” she said.
She went on to say that after having her first child, daughter Olympia, she was in the gym and eating clean in order to shed some pounds, but they just wouldn’t budge.
“Honestly it was the best decision and the best thing I did for my body in a long time,” she later added of the popular drug.
She also noted that she was initially unsure of whether or not she wanted to go public with the info but decided to share her story in the hopes of “changing the conversation.”
However, as evidenced by a handful of comments on her page, many felt disappointed that the star athlete was pushing the drug and felt she was caving into the societal pressures to look a certain way.
“Its so sad & disappointing that a legendary athlete like Serena is marketing this and millions of girls who follow her will think this is the way out,” wrote one user in the comments section of her post.
“Serena Williams is one of the healthiest people on the planet. This isn’t about ‘health.’ This is about the pressure to be THIN. I’m so sad she’s using her platform to reinforce the idea that healthy and thin are the same thing. This is going to do so much damage,” said another.
There were others however, that thanked Williams for her transparency and pushed for her to take the reigns of her health in whatever way she saw fit.
“I love the clarity. Too many people are lying and not being transparent. Do you Serenaaaaa,” one other user said.
Added another: “Instead of shaming Serena, shame a system that causes women to feel like they must be thin. I’m happy Serena is doing what she feels she needs to be happy and whole.”
