Serena Williams brought a regal aura in an open-knit coordinated Elie Saab look to the Princesa De Asturias 2025 awards reception on Thursday in Oviedo, Spain, where the 23-time grand slam champion was honored for her decorated tennis career.
For the occasion, at which the Wyn Beauty founder met with members of Spain’s royal family, Williams wore the oversize macramé coat and coordinated strapless dress in white by the Lebanese designer. The look featured a floral-inspired macramé construction with a sculptural, open-knit texture, designed with an elongated silhouette.

Worn as a layer over her shoulders, Williams coordinated the coat with her midi dress, which featured the same macramé floral motif in a column silhouette. For an added pop of color, the tennis champion wore a pair of red, pointed-toe pumps.
Elie Saab’s macramé patterning features in black as well, in both a midi dress and minidress design similar to the style Williams wore on Friday. The pattern is described as a decorative textile craft that utilizes knotting instead of weaving or knitting to craft apparel or decorative items.

Williams’ Elie Saab coordinated look stood out amongst the other honorees and guests at the Princesa De Asturias awards ceremony and reception. Members of Spain’s royal family opted for suited attire, with Queen Letizia in a gray double-breasted look and daughters Leonor, Princess of Asturias, in navy and Infanta Sofía of Spain in vibrant red.
The 2025 Princesa De Asturias Award recipients included honorees with disciplines in science, communications and literature, among other fields. Williams decades-long career as a venerated professional tennis player earned the former athlete a place among Friday’s award recipients.

The macramé design motif is a popular technique featured throughout several Elie Saab designs. Utilizing the ornate and often colorful technique for the designer’s creations, the style features throughout Elie Saab’s collections over the years, notably in the early 2010s and incorporated in the designer’s couture curations.
