More than four decades after its groundbreaking release, Michael Jackson’s Thriller continues to captivate audiences and dominate music charts, proving its status as one of the most enduring albums of all time. The multi-genre, hit-packed collection has not only maintained its presence on several U.S. rankings but recently surged back into the top 10 on the Vinyl Albums chart, reaffirming the King of Pop’s lasting appeal.
A Resurgence in Sales
According to Luminate, Thriller’s sales across all formats increased by more than 28% in the latest tracking period, selling approximately 3,900 copies in the U.S. alone. This boost propelled the album from No. 17 to No. 10 on the Vinyl Albums chart—a testament to its continued popularity among vinyl collectors and music enthusiasts.
But the resurgence isn’t limited to vinyl. Thriller also climbed from No. 30 to No. 25 on the Top Album Sales chart, which aggregates sales across vinyl, CDs, cassettes, and digital downloads. This shows that the album’s appeal spans multiple listening formats, bridging generations of fans.
Charting Across Five Billboard Rankings
Thriller’s influence extends across five Billboard charts, climbing on all of them during this tracking period. Beyond Vinyl Albums and Top Album Sales, the album holds strong positions on the Top R&B Albums (up to No. 13) and Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums charts (up to No. 29), further highlighting its cross-genre resonance.
Michael Jackson’s Presence on the Billboard 200
On the all-encompassing Billboard 200 chart, Thriller made its most impressive leap, soaring 30 spots to reach No. 108. The album moved an impressive 11,500 equivalent units, with streaming platforms driving the majority of this consumption.
Multiple Albums in the Spotlight
Michael Jackson’s legacy isn’t limited to Thriller. His compilation, The Essential Michael Jackson, also remains a strong contender, climbing to No. 88 on the Billboard 200. It continues to hold steady on the Top R&B Albums (No. 10) and Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums charts (No. 23), reflecting sustained interest in his broader catalog.
More than 40 years after Thriller first changed the music landscape, Michael Jackson’s masterpiece continues to resonate, with fresh waves of listeners rediscovering—and celebrating—the unparalleled artistry of the King of Pop.
