Mariah Carey Shares Why Her Unreleased Michael Jackson Collaboration Isn’t on New Album: “It Should Be On It”
Fans of both Mariah Carey and the late Michael Jackson have a new reason to hope for a musical treasure yet to be unveiled. During a recent appearance on Andy Cohen’s Watch What Happens Live, the Grammy-winning singer revealed that she has an unreleased collaboration with the King of Pop — a track she describes as a “classic” that, unfortunately, didn’t make it onto her latest album Here for It All due to complications with Jackson’s estate.
A Song Held Back by Estate Decisions
When Cohen asked Carey if the rumored Michael Jackson collaboration was “in the vault,” she clarified that the track isn’t hidden away but is “right there.” However, she explained that the delay in its release stems from ongoing projects by Jackson’s estate. “They’re doing something really huge for him,” Carey said, suggesting that releasing the song now could interfere with those plans.
Expressing her frustration, Carey said, “I love the song. I’m so upset that it’s not coming out on this album. It should be on it. Every time I would play it for somebody, they’d be like, ‘Wow.’” She shared that the track features her singing along with Jackson’s original vocals, with new background vocals she added, describing it as one of his timeless works.
A Call to Michael Jackson’s Management
Carey didn’t hold back her appeal, urging anyone in contact with Jackson’s management to “give a call” and make the collaboration available to fans. The singer’s desire to share this music highlights the strong artistic connection she had with Jackson, as well as her respect for his enduring legacy.
A History of Friendship and Collaboration

Mariah Carey and Michael Jackson’s relationship went beyond just this unreleased track. The two music icons were close friends and had worked together before, notably on Jackson’s charity single “What More Can I Give” for the United We Stand benefit concert honoring victims of 9/11. Carey also famously performed “I’ll Be There” with Trey Lorenz at Jackson’s public memorial in 2009, a heartfelt tribute to the pop legend who passed away that year at age 50.
Following Jackson’s death, Carey publicly honored his immense contributions to music and his spirit of generosity. “No artist will ever take his place. His star will shine forever,” she said, underscoring the deep respect she held for the King of Pop.
Looking Ahead: Michael Jackson’s Story Continues
As fans await this unreleased collaboration, anticipation is also building for the upcoming Michael Jackson biopic directed by Antoine Fuqua. The film, starring Jackson’s nephew Jaafar Jackson, is slated for release in spring 2026 after several delays. This new project promises to shine a spotlight on Jackson’s life and legacy for a new generation.
For now, Mariah Carey’s heartfelt call serves as a reminder of the incredible music still waiting to be heard — and of the enduring bond between two of the music world’s most iconic voices.
