Karen’s journey with Michael began serendipitously. In 1981, while working with photographer Dick Zimmerman on the cover of the Thriller album, Karen was introduced to Michael. She recalled her first impression:

“Dick told me he was bringing someone special for me to put makeup on. Then Michael appeared. At that time, he wasn’t yet the global star we know today. Honestly, what caught my attention most wasn’t him but the little tiger he carried in his arms. While I was doing his makeup, I said, ‘I love your tiger,’ and he laughed. When he left, I thought nothing of it. But the next day, his secretary called and said, ‘Mr. Jackson wants you for his next video.’”

That next video was Beat It, marking the beginning of a decades-long professional relationship and friendship.

From Shyness to Stardom: Witnessing Transformation

During the Beat It shoot, Karen saw a side of Michael that few ever experienced. The video’s first scene took place in a cramped hotel room on Los Angeles’ Skid Row. Karen described Michael as shy and soft-spoken off-camera, but once the playback started, everything changed:

“The shy boy I had known suddenly transformed into someone else entirely. The way he looked at the camera, the energy, the passion—it was mesmerizing. It wasn’t just him performing; it was as if the music took over. He later explained, ‘It’s not me. It’s God coming through me.’”

This profound transformation left an indelible mark on Karen.

Two Decades of Creativity and Magic

Karen’s role in Michael’s life wasn’t limited to makeup. She collaborated with world-renowned photographers like Herb Ritts, Jonathan Exley, and Dick Zimmerman, and worked on projects with legendary directors like Martin Scorsese, Nick Brandt, and Francis Ford Coppola. Her work allowed her to witness Michael’s creative genius and his kindness.

She recalls:

“Michael was exceptional—polite, quiet, and incredibly sweet. Working with him gave me opportunities to see the world and learn lessons I never would have otherwise. He filled my life with so many gifts and believed in my talent. He gave me the confidence to create.”

A Legacy Beyond Loss

Michael’s death in 2009 left Karen devastated. However, through her grief, she discovered a profound lesson that he had instilled in her:

“Michael taught me to share my gifts. After being traumatized by his loss, it took me a year to understand that his ability to give didn’t have to end with his death. The greatest gift he gave me was belief in my talent. Now, I’m here to continue the journey he started for me.”
