Price Is Right has several rare occurrences. Every time one happens, it’s a major deal for contestants, viewers, and even the hosts

Like many game shows, Price Is Right has seen several rare occurrences over the decades, but every time one appears, it’s a major deal for contestants, viewers, and even the hosts, Bob Barker and Drew Carey.

While few players of the hit CBS game show have seen, let alone experienced, such occasions, diehard fans are always on the lookout for the rare moments or even some that have yet to happen at all.

Rare occurrences can happen at any time in a Price Is Right episode, including while contestants play their games, spin the Showcase Wheel, and bid in the Showcase round.

With a couple rare occurences having happened this week alone, it’s worth taking a look at what the show’s rare occurences actually look like.

For instance, it’s extremely uncommon for two contestants to spin $1 on the Big Wheel in their initial spins, and then again on their second spins to reach the $1,000 bonus and the $25,000 prize.

This almost happened during an April episode in 2021. Contestant Kiara Thomas spun 20 cents and 80 cents, winning the $1,000 prize, a trip to the Showcase round, and a bonus spin, which landed on $1 and gave her an additional $25,000.

Later that day, during a special The Price Is Right at Night, contestant Jack Zager spun 40 cents and 60 cents to win the $1,000 bonus, and followed it up with a dollar spin of his own to secure the additional $25,000 prize.

A three-way tie on the wheel for $1 is also a very rare event. This is so rare that when it happened on Sept. 27, 1991, then host Bob Barker told the contestants it was only the second time.

It also happened on Oct. 30, 2003, and Oct. 17, 2016, the first time since Carey took over hosting duties in 2007.

The Big Wheel is a significant part of the show, but landing on $1 on both spins is a major occurence for a player, too.

Carey was shocked during the June 24 episode when three players earned $1k on the wheel, with player Trisha landing on $1, player Charlene spinning two numbers that also equalled $1, and player Heather earning another $1.

Heather landed on a 5, winning $10k and $11k altogether.

There have been other unusual events on the show, such as a contestant being asked to leave the stage due to an invalid spin, or a contestant winning two cars in a single game, which just happened on the June 17 episode of the show.

Rare occurrences on The Price Is Right can also happen during games. Bullseye and Add ‘Em Up are two games that were retired due to their low win rate. Lucky Seven and Pay the Rent are also rarely won.

A player can win a hard game sometimes but it’s even rarer if a contestant wins a game on the first try, if multiple tries are given. Carey also just experienced this during the June 23 episode this week.

Carey was left gobsmacked after a player made history by being the first person to win Cover Up on their first try in 20 years, something he’d never seen since becoming host.

He told player Alyssa, “If you get the price correct on the first try, congratulations, you’ll be the first winner in Price is Right history, probably,” before confirming, “Long time ago, back when – probably when Bob was host, not when I was host.”
