Former player Serena Williams’ recent claim about facing “witchcraft and black magic” allegations surprised her sister Venus Williams and singer-songwriter Ciara. This came as all three had to reveal the weirdest rumor they had heard about themselves.

In September, the Williams sisters announced their new podcast called “Stockton Street,” named after the place they spent their childhood in Compton, California. The first episode was released on September 17, as the two icons interacted with each other, without a guest.

On the latest episode, Serena asked Ciara to name the “craziest thing” she had heard about herself. The star singer said that she was told that motherhood would significantly limit her abilities. Married to the New York Giants quarterback, Russell Wilson, Ciara has four children. She added that motherhood gave her extra motivation to work hard.

When it was Serena Williams’ turn to answer the same question, she said (via her X handle):

“Oh, the craziest thing that I ever heard about me was that I did witchcraft and black magic because I was beating some girl a lot. And so she claimed that we did black magic to beat her.” (37:40)

Venus Williams quipped:

“From what I understand, someone in her team consulted a black magician to beat you.”

As far as Venus is concerned, she mentioned people bugging her with false stories about her. She said:

“It’s not the craziest thing, but people constantly telling you where you were, what you did, and how you did these things. And, I’m like, ‘I had never even been to that place.’ And you just have to just kind of go along with it because they’ll fight you on it. I’m like, ‘I’ve never met you in my life.’ Like, leave me alone. Get help.”

Before launching their podcast “Stockton Street,” the Williams sisters sat down for an interview with The Hollywood Reporter in SeptemberSerena Williams revealed that the podcast would not be exclusively tennis-related and that they would discuss other aspects of life as well.

Serena, 44, said that since Venus was one of her biggest rivals, they had to maintain a certain distance from each other. She added that the sisters can be more open with each other now that the younger sibling has retired.

“As close as we are, we had to keep so many things distant because of our jobs. As much as she’s my sister, she’s also my opponent, and you can’t be as open as you want to be. So this is a real opportunity to do something that we’ve been trying to do, and also just a discovery thing as well,” Serena said.

Venus, 45, remarked that the podcast would not be all about positivity and that they would try to keep it real.

“We don’t necessarily coddle each other. We weren’t coddled in life. And we want to give that sort of tough love, not only to each other, but that we had to give to ourselves. Life is very real. So the message has to be real,” Venus said.

The first episode, which featured only the sisters, was shot at Arthur Ashe Stadium before this year’s New York Major.

Serena Williams played her last match at the same venue at the 2022 US Open. She retired with 23 Grand Slam singles titles. Seven-time Major-winner Venus is still active, and she last played at the 2025 US Open. The siblings also won 14 Grand Slams together in the doubles category.
