The game show host has what is arguably the easiest job on television. Maybe second, if you subscribe to the notion that Vanna White touching a board to reveal letters is easier (SPOILER: it is). You explain the game, ask questions, guffaw at ridiculous answers.

Or, in the case of a game like Jeopardy!, reveal the question to the answer that the contestants got wrong, like you’re all that and a bag of chips — the truth is you have the card with the correct question on it, so of course you know what it is. Long story short, a host should probably stick to hosting, and leave the playing of the game to contestants, lest you be shown up on national TV. It’s a lesson that The Price Is Right host Drew Carey learned the hard way.

David Gets Ready to Play Hole-in-One on ‘The Price Is Right’

On the May 15th, 2025 show, the third item up for Contestants’ Row to bid on was a 32-inch desktop computer, replete with a wireless keyboard, a mouse, two screen wipes, and a cleaning cloth.

The Price Is Right contestant David came closest, bidding $1,720 on the prize with a retail value of $1,812. David made his way up to the stage to stand by Carey, where it was revealed he’d be playing Hole-in-One to win a 2025 Kia Soul LX.

The way the game is played is pretty straightforward. The contestant is shown six grocery items, which they then have to put in the correct order based on the price, from lowest to highest.

Each one they get right means one step closer to the hole they need to putt a golf ball into. Sink it, they win. Miss it, and they potentially get articles like this one written about them. Carey asked, “David, do you golf at all?” “I do a little bit,” he replied. So far, so good.

The six items David had to place in order were a 20-ounce bottle of Faultless ironing spray, Oral B dental floss, Galil watermelon seeds, six Beyond Breakfast sausage patties, Just for Men dark brown mustache and beard dye, and Yo Mama’s spicy marinara sauce. David started with the dental floss, then the seeds, the ironing spray, the marinara sauce, the hair dye, and, as the highest-priced, he chose the plant-based sausage.

The floss was $6.79, the watermelon seeds were $8.49, but the third item, the ironing spray, was $3.99, so David only got to move up to the second line. Then Carey made the fatal mistake of saying, “I’m going to show everybody at home how easy this is.”

With that, Carey took the putter in hand, and lined it up with the ball as the audience cheered. He took the shot, and the ball skipped over the hole, hit the wall, and nearly rolled off the course.

He then kicked it back with his feet, only to miss the hole again. Carey eventually stopped the ball and kicked it purposely into the hole. The phrase you’re looking for is either “eating crow” or “putting your foot in your mouth.” Carey humbly walked back to David as the audience cheered Carey for finally sinking the ball.

So now it was David’s turn, and the ball bounced over the hole. Only to add insult to injury, David’s ball rolled backwards, went into the hole, and David not only won a car, but showed Carey up on his own show.

He hugged Carey and ran over to his car, where model Amber Lancaster congratulated him, saying, “Congratulations! You did a little bounce back.” Carey would get a modicum of revenge on the Showcase Showdown wheel, with David spinning a 105, but the damage had been done. It could have been significantly worse, however.

Had the same happened when 84-year-old Margaret sank the ball on her second try, Carey may have never lived that down. Hopefully, this is a lesson learned for the host to stick to what he’s best at. Only there’s a small part of me that would love to see how Carey fares on Cliff Hangers.
