Happy birthday, Drew Carey! The comedian and TV host turns 59 on May 23, 2017.

This year also marks the 10th anniversary of Carey’s hosting gig on The Price Is Right. In 2007, he took over from the legendary Bob Barker, who retired after nearly four decades at the helm of the longest-running game show in America.

In a recent interview with Gold Derby, Carey revealed the wise advice Barker gave him as he took over his hosting duties.

“He said, ‘Don’t try to copy me, just make it your own show,’” Carey recalled, adding that Barker was “really kind” and “supportive” as he started out.

Carey took Barker’s advice to heart, adding his own spin to the show, tweaking the set and updating some of the games. However, while the show has evolved over the past decade, the heart of the program—people winning prizes while having lots of fun—hasn’t changed.

Carey says watching people win big is his favorite part of hosting.

“I wasn’t in the TV business until I was in my 30s, so I had a whole life of not making any money and scraping by paycheck to paycheck,” he told Gold Derby. “And when I see people up here getting excited about winning $5,000 or $10,000—which isn’t life-changing money but it’s month-changing money—I know what it means to win that kind of money. That’s a lot of money to a lot of people, including me still. So I can relate to people really well because of that.”
