Cooper Flagg Dallas Mavericks
As the 2025-26 NBA season approaches, Duke standout Cooper Flagg, who went first overall in the 2025 NBA Draft, received some advice from LeBron James and Steve Nash. James, who himself was the top pick in the 2003 draft, gave some advice to this year’s number one pick.
Speaking on his podcast, ‘Mind the Game’, James said about Flagg:
“When you’re selected with the first pick, the expectations are automatically put on you. It doesn’t matter if they’re right or wrong. Cooper Flagg is the same age I was when I started. The expectations are such that you place an 18-year-old out there, and he’s supposed to be the best right away. I think that’s unfair, but also something that kids like Cooper and I can use as motivation.”
Playing for Duke, Flagg averaged 16.8 points, 7.2 rebounds, 4.3 assists, and 1.7 steals per game, showcasing his versatility as a scorer, playmaker, and defender. Joining a team like the Dallas Mavericks, which comes with established stars like Anthony Davis, Kyrie Irving, and Klay Thompson, gives him a supportive environment that could accelerate his adjustment to the NBA.
Steve Nash offers a cautionary perspective for Cooper Flagg
Two-time MVP Steve Nash offered a more cautious outlook, warning about the pressures that come with being a top draft pick. Nash added that far more players achieve success quietly over time than those who immediately meet the high expectations set for stars like LeBron James.
“The biggest challenge is that, as a top pick, everyone expects immediate results,” Nash said. “The scrutiny, the spotlight, the pressure to perform every single night — it’s intense. Even the most talented players need time to adjust, and there will be moments where people question if (Cooper Flagg) is ready. How he handles that pressure will define the start of his career.”
Nash’s perspective underscores the challenges Flagg will face: big expectations, a constant spotlight, and the need to perform under pressure. His warning serves as a reminder that even elite talent must navigate, amongst other things, the mental and emotional aspects of the professional game.
