The Kansas City Chiefs didn’t start their season as they usually do, and instead of starting undefeated, they found themselves 0-2 for the first time in the history of quarterback Patrick Mahomes’ NFL tenure.

It took the Chiefs until their Sept. 21 matchup against the New York Giants to pull off a win, which is uncharacteristic of a team that’s won two of the last three Super Bowls.

The Chiefs are now 4-3, and during those contests, Mahomes has passed for 1,800 yards with 14 touchdowns and two interceptions, according to ESPN statistics. He’s also led Kansas City to score on 52% of their offensive possessions, according to TruMedia, marking the Chiefs’ best number since Mahomes’ debut year as a starter back in 2018.

So, why are the Chiefs seemingly unstoppable after those rough early games? Well, something clicked during that Giants game for Mahomes, who recently opened up about what’s changed for him. The two-time MVP says he was overanalyzing during too many plays, and he changed that after his first few games of this season, which has him again as the frontrunner for MVP this season.

“At the end of the day, you’ve got to go out there and play football,” Mahomes recently, told The Athletic about his turnaround. “And I think we’ve done that to start this year off, and I feel like it’s giving me confidence to be who I am.”

“It makes my job easier whenever you know that what you think before the play is going to happen happens, and the guys get open,” Mahomes said.

It certainly helps that the Chiefs are fairly healthy again and have receiver Rashee Rice back following his six-game suspension, too.

The Chiefs take on the Commanders on Monday, and Kansas City is favored in that game, especially with the Commanders dealing with an injury to star QB Jayden Daniels.

“I think this is an excellent spot for the Chiefs, who are improving with each week,” Lorenzo Reyes of USA Today noted. “Now with Rashee Rice back in the fold, the offense is far more dynamic. The Commanders, meanwhile, might be without Jayden Daniels, who would likely be limited even if he can play with an injured hamstring. I think Kansas City rolls here.”

“The Chiefs got Rashee Rice back and look like Super Bowl contenders once again,” Tyler Dragon of USA Today added. “Kansas City’s won two straight games.”
