During the preseason, the Cleveland Browns became a true media spectacle after selecting Shedeur Sanders, the high-profile quarterback from the Colorado Buffaloes, in the fifth round of last year’s draft. This was notable because just two rounds earlier, they had picked Dillon Gabriel, who made his first NFL start in Week 5 of this season.

Kevin Stefanski could be fired before the Cleveland Browns' season ends; Shedeur Sanders is the key

With Shedeur Sanders on the roster, all media attention has focused on the Browns. Nowadays, people talk more about the team’s third-string quarterback than anything else. It seems that the team may have gotten out of Kevin Stefanski’s control. Since taking over in 2020, Stefanski has twice been named Head Coach of the Year.

Kevin Stefanski has led this franchise to the playoffs twice, in 2020 and 2023. This is significant because, since the team returned to Cleveland in 1999, they have only made the playoffs four times-two of which were under Stefanski, whose job now seems far from secure.

Stefanski is on the hot seat

In addition to those playoff appearances, Stefanski delivered another milestone for the Browns: their first playoff win in decades, achieved in the 2020 season when Baker Mayfield dominated in a win over the Pittsburgh Steelers. They hadn’t won in the playoffs since 1995.

Ironically, just a year later, the Browns moved on from Mayfield after a difficult season. Today, Mayfield is a top-10 quarterback in the NFL and once again an MVP candidate with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Through five weeks of the 2025 season, Mayfield has completed 113 of 139 passes (81.3%) for 1,297 yards, 13 touchdowns, and just 1 interception.

The Browns signed Deshaun Watson to a five-year, $230 million contract, which ultimately turned into a disaster. Several missteps have left the Browns teetering on the brink, and it seems likely that Stefanski’s tenure may end this season. Even so, he will likely have opportunities to interview for head coaching positions elsewhere. His record with the Browns from last season to now stands at 4-14, with an overall record of 41-48 during his tenure.

The Browns are 1-4 and are on track for a high draft pick. They will also have two first-round picks next year, thanks to a trade with the Jacksonville Jaguars (Travis Hunter). This could be the perfect moment for a new regime in Cleveland.
